Breast Reduction for Men and Women

Breast reduction is a surgical procedure that is readily available for candidates whom doctors believe will benefit from it. The purpose of this procedure is to reduce the size and improve the appearance of the individual's breasts. Many people believe that for women, being well endowed in this area is something that is a Godsend but the reality of it is that there are times when it is too much already. Some women suffer from pain and discomfort in their backs, shoulders and necks because of the heaviness that come with overabundant bosoms. For others, the inconvenience of looking for specially sized underwear and even tops can be a hassle that they do not wish to have anymore. Other reasons for women to have the breast reduction operation done may be because they feel that they are too sexualized by the enormity of their bosoms, they feel that they look unattractive or that their breasts have actually sagged too much due to their heaviness.

Many women also have health problems due to the size of the size of their bosom. Examples of these health problems are difficulty in filling their lungs with air, chafing of the skin under the underside of the breast that touches the abdomen, poor blood circulation and excessive indentations of the bra straps on the shoulders and around the torso. On the part of men, not a lot suffer from gynecomastia, but those who do often have some insecurity regarding the size and prominence of their breasts. Many of those with this condition also have similarities with the bosoms of women wherein the nipples are enlarged and more prominent. They usually have issues with taking off their clothes in front of other people and intimacy with possible partners.

The Procedure

Breast reduction is a procedure that reshapes the size and form of the bosom in a more natural manner or in accordance to the preferences of the person who has them. There are several ways that a plastic surgeon might go about the surgery. One very popular one for women is called the keyhole incision plan, in which the surgeon makes a keyhole like incision on the mammary organ itself. This is usually done on women whose nipple may be located too low in the bosom.

Other kinds of incisions are the inferior pedicle technique, vertical scar technique and the horizontal scar technique. The aim of all these methods is to reduce the size of the breasts as well as to reshape them. One other goal of the plastic surgeon when performing the breast reduction operation is to have a minimum of scarring visible to the eye as possible. This is especially preferable for women. Another thing that surgeons are careful with when it comes to women is that they try their best for the nipple to retain its function when the woman might need to breastfeed. Men on the other hand do not prioritize nipple function because they do not need to breastfeed. It is important to maintain the sensation in this area.
